Get Your Closet Organized – Take Control of Your Accessories

Accessories can transform an outfit from simple to stunning – but they can also create chaos if they’re not organized. Jewelry, handbags, belts, scarves, and sunglasses often end up scattered in drawers or piled on shelves, where they’re forgotten. With a little structure and creativity, you can bring order to your closet and make the most of your accessories every day.
Start by Sorting
Before you can organize, you need to know what you have. Lay all your accessories out on your bed or a large table – seeing everything at once gives you a clear overview. Sort them into categories: jewelry, handbags, belts, scarves, hats, sunglasses, and so on.
Once you see it all together, it’s easier to decide what stays and what goes. Ask yourself: When was the last time I wore this? Does this still fit my style? If you can’t remember, it might be time to let it go.
Create three piles: keep, donate/sell, and discard. This step gives you a fresh start and makes organizing what’s left much easier.
Create a Storage System
Now that you’ve sorted your accessories, it’s time to find storage solutions that fit your space and lifestyle.
- Jewelry: Use small boxes, drawer dividers, or jewelry stands to keep necklaces from tangling and earrings from disappearing. A jewelry box with compartments can make a big difference.
- Handbags: Stuff them with tissue paper to help them keep their shape, and store them upright on a shelf. If you have many, hang them on hooks or use dust bags to protect them.
- Belts: Roll them neatly in a drawer or hang them on a belt rack or multi-hook hanger.
- Scarves: Fold them in a drawer or hang them on a scarf hanger so you can see them all at once.
- Sunglasses: A small display case or divided box keeps them organized and easy to grab on your way out.
The key is visibility – if you can see your accessories, you’re more likely to use them.
Think Seasonally
Just like your clothes, accessories can be rotated by season. In winter, you’ll reach for wool scarves and gloves, while straw hats and bright sunglasses belong to summer.
Store off-season items in labeled bins or fabric bags and place them on a high shelf or under the bed. When the weather changes, swap them out. This keeps your closet tidy and ensures you only see what’s relevant right now.
Create a Style Zone
If you have the space, set up a small “style zone” in your closet – a spot where you display your favorite accessories. It could be a tray with your go-to jewelry or a few hooks for your most-used handbags.
Seeing your accessories displayed together makes it easier to plan outfits and experiment with new combinations. It also adds a touch of everyday luxury – like having your own mini boutique at home.
Maintain and Refresh Regularly
Accessories last longer when you take care of them. Clean your jewelry regularly, wipe down handbags with a soft cloth, and store leather belts away from direct sunlight.
Make it a habit to review your accessories a couple of times a year. It doesn’t take long, but it prevents clutter from creeping back in. You’ll also notice what you might be missing – maybe a classic scarf, a versatile belt, or a bag that ties your wardrobe together.
Organization Brings Confidence
When your accessories are organized, getting dressed becomes easier and more enjoyable. You’ll save time, avoid frustration, and rediscover pieces you already love.
An organized accessory system isn’t just about tidiness – it’s about creating calm and inspiration in your daily routine. When everything has its place, expressing your personal style becomes effortless.
